My False Tanning Routine

I have never made any secret here on my blog that I am somewhat of a false tanning addict. I wish that I was confident enough to embrace my naturally pale skin, but it is just not for me. I have quite an olive complexion, so rather than going as white as snow, my skin can end up looking pretty ashy when I am pale, and I simply don’t think that it is the best look for me. So, over the years I have became addicted to false tans and I am obsessed with the way that they make me look and feel. So, I thought that for this blog post I would share with you guys my fake tanning routine and how I get an even application!

Have a good old scrub
To begin with, I always start out by having a lovely hot shower and then I scrub every inch of my body. I make sure that every single scrap of my fake tan from the last application is fully removed. I use my good old exfoliating gloves and I use some body scrub and I just work it into my body. I then get my nail brush around my knuckles and my feet to ensure that no product has settled into my dry areas.

Shave and prep the body
Once I am then scrubbed to within an inch of my life, I then go in and do all of my other bits like applying my oils and shaving. These are things that you don’t want to do when you shower throughout the week because it will remove your false tan even quicker than if you were just to shower it off every day. Plus, if your body is perfectly smooth, it will give you a much more even application.

Dry and moisturise
Once I am out of the shower, I then dry my skin completely. I tend to just pat the towel all over my body because I don’t like to rub my skin dry and cause lines or premature creases. I then go in with a really rich moisturiser on areas where I am prone to be a little drier like around my elbows, knees, hands and my feet. This way, it creates a barrier so that the fake tan doesn’t soak too deep into the skin and get too dark.

Go in with first layer and wait
I then like to go in with my first layer. I like to work in thin layers and build up the product just in the areas where I feel like I need it. I start at my feet and work my way up my body. I only ever apply two pumps of mousse to my mitt at a time and I then work that in circular motions to my body. Once my body is covered, I then apply my dressing gown and lay on my bed to give it 20 minutes to sink into the skin.

Go in with second layer in specific areas
Once I feel like my skin is near enough dry, I then go back in with more product just in the areas where I need it. For me, this is on my chest, and my shins. It seems to not develop as deep in the areas where there is more bone than flesh. I just apply some to my mitt and then pat it into my skin, making sure not to rub because I don’t want to disturb the first layer that I applied. I then lay back down and let it completely sink in before getting dressed.

Wait and shower it off
I then give the false tan some time to develop and really soak into the skin. My normal fake tan is an express one so you can wash it off after just a couple hours, but I always leave it overnight and then shower it off in the morning. I make sure to use gentle on the skin product and I don’t rub the skin when I am drying once I get out of the shower. I then moisturise to prolong my tan.

My tips
Use a false tan with a colour guard so you can see where you have applied it. Work in thin layers to build up the product. Use even amounts throughout the application. Moisturise daily to prolong the tanner.

I hope that you guys liked this blog post and if you are a fake tanning fan like me that this helped you out a touch. I have so many different products that I love, but the one that I cannot pull myself away from at the moment has to be the Loving Tan Mousse in Ultra Dark because in my opinion it gives the most stunning sun-kissed look to the skin, without it looking too deep or ‘false’. Make sure to leave me a comment down below and let me know if you are a false tanner or if you are a fan of the pale life!

  1. I loved reading your fake tanning routine! Mine is pretty similiar to your own although I never thought to layer up my tan. I just tend to do one layer and then sleep it in overnight. But I think I might try build up my layers. Thanks for sharing xx

  4. I think I might try this, I currently use the Dove summer tan lotion which is lovely, but I've never found the "one" if that makes sense. I've never heard of this brand before, although I do think I've heard bloggers mention it before!
