My Capsule Wardrobe Essentials

Today's blog post is going to be all about my capsule wardrobe. I have been on with creating my ideal capsule wardrobe for the past couple of years and I feel like I am at a point now where I can share with you what I hold inside my closet doors. For those of you who don’t know, a capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing, which can be interchanged in order to create many different looks, for any occasion or season. A couple of years back, I would open the door to my closet and clothes would just spill out, so I stripped it all back and I have never been happier with my lovely little collection of clothes. I reach for everything in there and I have got my money's worth out of every single piece.

When I first decided to create my capsule wardrobe the first thing that I decided to do was to go through my closet and have a good clear out. I threw out and donated everything that I didn’t reach for or that was just collecting dust. I was very cut throat when I was clearing out and I ended up binning vast majority of my clothing.  I then sat myself down and made a list of all the items that I wanted to add into my wardrobe, in order to create the ultimate capsule wardrobe. So, in this post I am going to share with you some of the items that I have included…

Essential Tops – Cami’s, Vests & T-Shirts
Tops are such a big part of my capsule wardrobe and I have collected quite a few of them over the past 12 months. I reach for a basic top or t-shirt on a near enough daily basis when I don’t reach for a dress or knitwear. I now have a drawer in my closet that is dedicated to nothing but basic tops, all that can be interchanged to create many different outfits all year long. I have some that were pretty low price and other basic items that did set me back a little more, but I know that they will last, and I will get a lot of wear out of them.

First up, I wanted some long sleeve crew neck t-shirts and I wanted them in a couple different colours. They sell these in Primark and they are good quality for the price and last me a really long time, I have them in black, grey and white and they are a great basic to throw on in a morning and head off to work. I also, have basic black and white short sleeve t-shirts that look really great with jeans. As well as these, I also have a small selection of camis, vest tops and tube tops, which see me through the warmer weather and that I can also layer up when the weather gets slightly cooler.

Buttons Ups and Blouses
Up next, I have my selection of button ups and blouses. These are something that isn’t really necessary if you are building the bare bones of your capsule wardrobe, but they are something that I find myself reaching for all of the time. My style is quite relaxed, and I would say quite grungy, so instead of something quite light and floral, I will grab a button up. And instead of your typical workwear dress, I will go for a nice blouse with a pair of trousers, which is why I wanted to add these items to my closet and I find myself reaching for them more than I thought I would.

I have a selection of different button up shirts that I have hanging in my closet. I have some plain white boyfriend style shirts as well as plaid shirts for more relaxed days. I also have some button up shirts that I like to wear to work that are a little more structured and formal. In total, I probably own about 5 different button ups and I wear them all. As well as those, I also have around 4 blouses in my collection that are great for throwing on for work or even an evening out. They are all different colours and vary between black and white and with them I feel like I have something for every occasion. I feel like blouses paired with skinny trousers or jeans with heels, looks perfection.

Jumpers and Knitwear
This is probably one of my favourite areas of my capsule wardrobe and something that I wear half to death. I am the coldest person on the planet, so I collect jumpers and cardigans like they are going out of fashion, almost literally. As much as I like to look chic, I also like to be warm, so I have put together a lovely little collection of things that not only look nice, they also pull my outfits together and make me look very season appropriate when we get to the cooler months in the winter. I know that I have spoken many times here on my blog about my love of knitwear, so I will try and keep this one short and sweet.

First up, I have to mention my love of cashmere jumpers. John Lewis do the best cashmere jumpers, not only do they look the part, they are nice and warm, the quality is really nice, and they fit like a glove. They are fitted jumpers, so they actually give your body some definition. I will either wear these on their own with some trousers or a skirt, or I will layer a shirt underneath them. I also have some larger roll neck jumper and others that are just nice thick winter jumpers for those days where you don’t have something figure hugging. I also have a whole array of cardigans from long to short ones and in a range of colours. This way, I can wear some of my summerier clothes and make them more appropriate for the cold weather.

Dresses
I have hell of a lot of dresses in my capsule wardrobe, to suit any occasion that I may need a dress for. Some of these, I already had from before my big clear out, and others are new additions from where I feel like I had gaps in my collection. I love how a dress is just so easy to throw on and then go about your day. I wear dresses hell of a lot, whether it be to work, just out and about or in an evening and not to mention when I am on holiday. I will try to keep this one short, but I cannot promise anything!

Firstly, I have a couple of sun dresses, which see me through the warmer months, I have a red, white and black in a nice and lightweight material, I even wear these to work (bonus of working in a relaxed company). I then have a couple slightly more dressy dresses, which are ideal for nights out or heading out for a nice meal. Then I have a couple in-between dresses that I think can be worn pretty much everywhere and through every season. These are pretty middle of the range dresses that can be thrown on for heading to work or just doing bits out and about, or they can be layered up and made more appropriate for the winter months.

Trousers & Jeans
For the days when I am not wearing a dress or a skirt, I will be in a pair of trousers or jeans. I have been trying to hunt down over the past year, the most perfect pair of trousers and jeans for my shape. The thing with my lower half is that it is the most awkward shape in the world. I have skinny chicken legs, with a huge ass and a very narrow waist, so trying to find anything that actually fits without paying through the nose is a hard ask. But, I finally have some items in my collection that I am reaching for all of the time and I have really been loving wearing them.

In my collection of trousers, I primarily have skinny trousers. Some of my skinny trousers are from ASOS and are great for a low-cost pair of trousers for wearing on the daily to work or just for heading out. They do fit nice, but I will say that after a lot of wear, they can start to lose their shape. My other favourite skinny trousers are by the brand Joseph and they are incredible. They fit like a glove and are incredible comfortable, but they should be for the price. I also have a pair of wide leg trousers which look really nice for work with a pair of heels. Then I have a collection of jeans that I wear on my off days. I have 2 pairs of black skinny jeans, 2 pairs of blue skinny jeans a pair of loose boyfriend jeans. Other trousers in my collection are some skinny khaki cargo pants and a pair of leather trousers which I am hooked on!

Skirts
I love a good skirt and I reach for them all of the time. Every now and then, I will get bored of wearing trousers and jeans, so I will bust out a skirt and feel girly for a day. Over the past year, I have found myself wearing more and more skirts, so I dedicated a small section of my wardrobe to wearing skirts and I have really been loving some of the outfits that I have been putting together. I feel like skirts are broken into three categories of mini, midi and maxi, and I have some from each that I have really been loving.

For the miniskirts, I have quite the collection. Firstly, I have then in quite a few colours and textures so that I can create lots of different looks. One that I have been loving recently is my leather mini skirt, it looks so pretty paired with my cashmere jumpers or just a basic t-shirt. I have around 5 different miniskirts and they are all perfection. Then for midi skirts, I have an abundance of pencil skirts that are the perfect thing for work. I love to throw on a pencil skirt with a cami and I feel like I am good to go. I have then in so many different colours and I love how tight and fitted they are. Then for the warmer months I have several maxi skirts. I tend to go for nice and floaty ones, usually with a slit to show a little leg and make them easier to walk in!

Jackets and Coats
Like I said earlier on in this post, I am the coldest person in the wold, so I have a pretty hefty collection of coats and jackets. Even on the hottest days of the year, I have to carry at least a lightweight jacket with me, ‘just in case’, because I know for a fact that at some point I am going to get chilly. Coats are an area in my closet that I do really tend to splurge and treat myself to some high-end designer items and that is because if you get some really classic items, they can see you through so many seasons and still look chic.

I am going to fly through this pretty quick because I think the easiest way to do this is to just real them off pretty quickly. First up for coats is a classic trench coat, mine is from Burberry but I have another one from Religion that was a fraction of the price. For all weathers I have a big thick Parka that has seen me through many cold winters. I also have a large oversized boyfriend coat in a herringbone style, which is perfect for wanting to look smart and dressy in the cooler months. I then also have my aviator and leather jacket which are both from Acne, I wear them to death and they are amazing quality for the money, there is obviously much cheaper alternatives out there.

The for jackets, my denim jacket is something that I live in through the summer, it goes with everything and I love adding denim to outfits for a different texture. I also have a lightweight khaki jacket that is great for taking the chill off my shoulders and always looks good and in keeping with whatever season I wear it in. I have a camo jacket that does the same kind of thing, but adds a little bit of edginess to my outfits. Then for when I want to dress my outfits up a little, especially if I am heading to work, I may throw on a blazer. My blazer is by Balmain, which I know is so expensive it makes my eyes water, but Zara do some great alternatives.

Shoes & Boots
I am a huge lover of shoes and boots and I will admit that this is one area that I don’t perform that well with my capsule wardrobe. Obviously, the idea with a capsule wardrobe is to own as little items as possible, with many different variations and outfit options, I don’t do that very well when it comes to shoes. But, in my vast shoe and boot collection, I do have some essential pairs of shoes and boots that can see me through anything and they are the ones that I am going to share with you in this post.

Up first, I want to touch on my flat shoes. One of the main pairs of shoes that I live in on a daily basis is a pair of black flats, they go with, so many outfits and I wear them to death. For other flats I have a nude pair, a pair of red suede flats and a leopard print pair, these see me through every outfit that I want flat shoes with. Then for flat boots, I have an abundance of black boots that I wear through most of the cooler months. Moving onto heels, I like to go for typical stiletto style, with pointed toe, the Manolo Bhlanik BB Pumps are my favourite. I have these in black, nude and blue and I feel like these go with everything!

Accessories
Lastly, I want to mention some accessories that I have in my collection that I swear by. Sometimes a good accessory can take any outfit from been pretty drab and normal to looking out of this world and high fashion. I have a couple drawers in my closet which is dedicated to my collection of accessories, which includes jewellery, brooches, scarves and hair accessories. I won’t go through these individually, I will just let you know some of the key pieces that I have found myself reaching for time and time again over the past couple of months.

First up, I want to touch on jewellery. I am not really a fan of jewellery, on a daily basis I only ever tend to wear just my Tiffany Diamond Studs in my ears and that is it. But for other times, I like to jazz it up a little, I have a few items that I like to reach for. For one, I have a gold Cartier bracelet that is my favourite, I wear it all of the time and the reason that I love it so much is because it is so simple. I also have other things like stunning yet simple rings and necklaces that I love to wear. On a similar note, this past year brooches have been one of my favourite things. I love to be wearing a simple outfit and then I add a stunning vintage Chanel brooch and it takes it from been a basic outfit to looking chic. Then I have my scarf collection where I have pretty much every texture, length, colour and brand that is under the sun, I love a good scarf!

Anyway, that is a breakdown of my capsule wardrobe. I hope that the fashion lovers out there liked this post and if you want to check anything out that I have mentioned, I have added in links throughout the post.  Make sure to leave me a comment down below and let me know some of your capsule wardrobe items and the things that you couldn’t live without in your closet!

  8. I desperately would love to have a capsule wardrobe but I am honestly just such a clothes hoarder! It's definitely a lot more practical and what I love is that you really do treasure and wear most pieces if you have a capsule wardrobe! This post has though made me think I do need to have a good clear out of my coats because I too am a cold person and have far too many! xx
