Garnier Root Retouch Concealer Review

I have been on the market for something like this for ever such a long time and when I saw this advertise on the TV the other week, I knew I was going to have to pick it up and try it out for myself. Even though there are lots of other similar products out there, this was the first one that actually looked easy to use and not messy at all. So, I logged straight onto the Boots website and I tried it out the very moment that I opened the parcel.

I guess the thing to know about my hair is that I am naturally blonde. I wouldn't even call it blonde because it is pretty much white because it is that light blonde. Since around the age of 14, I have been dying my hair brown because I just found that it suited my medium complexion much more and it was easier to maintain than my very light blonde. For years now, I have been using the same Olia hair dye in the shade 4.0 because to me it is the most perfect brown because it doesn’t have any red tones running though, it only takes 20 minutes and costs me £10 each time, which is loads cheaper than going to the hairdressers each month.

The reason why I wanted a product like this was because my hair grows incredibly quickly. Last year I cut my hair into a bob and only 8 months later, my hair was already past my boobs because it had grown that much. As good as that may seem, I end up with really bad looking roots a week after dying my hair and it just looks straight up bad because of how light my natural hair is. So I thought that a product like this Garnier Express Retouch Root Concealer, to the and hide my very light roots!

I ordered this in the shade 4, which is their dark brown shade. I thought with me using the Garnier Olia hair dyes that this Garnier product would be a pretty close match. I opened this up and dabbed it onto my roots at the front of my hairline and it was straight up black. There was not a tint of brown to it, this was just plain black and looked crazy in my hair. I tried to blend it out using the sponge tip and my fingers, but it just made a god awful mess and still looked black!

Not only that but this stuff is horrifically sticky and makes your hair looks like a big greaseball. Once I had applied this, I left it for around 10 minutes and when I went to touch it, it felt like hair gel that simply hadn’t dried down. Plus, each time I did touch it, I would get a horrible black sticky residue all over my fingers and not to mention the mess it made on my white pillow case!

I really did try wit this w couple of times and I just couldn’t get it to work. I tried making sure not to get any of this on my scalp and just on the hair itself, I tried dabbing it only fingers and then at my roots and even applying it with a small makeup brush and not a bloody thing worked for this. I just always looked like I had roots 10 shades too dark for my hair and like I haven’t washed my hair in over a month!

I love so many different Garnier products, but this one was an absolute fail in my eyes. I had to wash my hair 3 times to get the residue out and even then it still felt like I had latex glue in the front of my hair. I think up next I am going to have to try out the L’Oreal Root Touch Up!

Let me know if you have tried this in the comments down below and tell me what you thought about it, or what you would recommend!

  4. Sounds horrible! I understand your frustration with grown out roots, they look very messy and if this would have worked, it could have been a game changer!

  9. Ah, products like these can always be a bit tricky. There are a lot of sprays on the market as well, but can't seem to understand how only 4 different shades are supposed to work for everyone. Especially with blonde! xD

It's best to embrace your roots, I guess. You don't want them to be greasy now do you :D Shame it didn't work, as it sounded promising!

  10. What a shame that this product didn't work out for you. I've noticed quite a few brands coming out with a version of this product but I imagine there isn't much wiggle room for quality as it needs to work and look amazing.
