Cover FX Matte Primer Review

I think that it is finally time for me to sit down and write a review all about the Cover FX Mattifying Primer. I have had this now for a couple months and I have been putting it through its paces. Usually when I do makeup posts, all I have to do is try it out a few times to know my opinion about it, but with this, I wanted to really try it out and put it through its paces a little. This is a primer that has been on my radar for such a long time, but every single time I have gone to buy it, it has been out of stock, which is why I have only just gotten around to trying it. It wasn’t until I saw this on Cult Beauty during all of the sales that I quickly headed to the checkout with this item. So, after months of trying this out I am going to let you know what I think about it.

The first thing that I want to mention is the packaging. You may have noticed that I always like to speak about packaging first in all of my reviews and that is just because when you get a new product, it is the first thing that you notice about something. With this Cover FX Primer, I have to admit that the packaging isn’t that amazing with it just being in a squeezy tube, I guess it is quite similar to the Cover FX Oil Free Foundation. I guess realistically, it doesn’t really matter what the packaging is like, it is all about the product, but when I am paying expensive for something, I do like it to look pretty. I think this is more practicality over prettiness!

The product itself is clear, which I guess makes no difference, but some primers can be different shades. Such as the Benefit Porefessional is more of a flesh tone, then you get your colour correcting primers that are greens, pinks and purples. The consistency of this is pretty thick, when I put some of this onto the back of my hand it doesn’t run because it isn’t a watery texture, it is firm, and it will hold its shape. Personally, I like a primer with a little bit more of substance to it, because I feel like they do more for my skin and the texture on my face.

When I have this Cover FX Mattifying primer on my face, it doesn’t feel overly heavy to say that it is quite thick. It makes my pores feel much smoother straight from the off. I will say that it isn’t as smoothing and pore perfecting as my beloved Benefit Porefessional primer, but this is marketed as a mattifying primer and not a pore minimiser, so I will let it off there. My makeup does glide on top of this primer really nice and smoothly, no matter what foundations or concealer I go in with. I have also never noticed anything breaking up when I reach for this primer, which makes it a winner in my book.

Now onto the most important thing about this primer and that is if it actually keeps me matte, all day long. I will say that when I first apply this primer, it does feel instantly mattifying on my nose, but not overly dry. Then throughout the day as my natural oils start to come out, it keeps them at bay and I don’t end up looking like a golden retriever with a wet nose. With my Benefit Porefessional, I do have to touch my nose up throughout the day, but with this one I don’t. I have even worn this underneath my makeup and gone to the gym and it has kept me from looking shine free throughout my whole routine.

Obviously, with this being a Cover FX product, it is a higher end primer. I paid around £25 for this in the sale, but I think when you buy this normally online it is around £30, which is still a reasonable price for a high-end primer. I honestly have been loving this Cover FX primer and I know that I am going to continue using it. I feel like when I do use this primer, my makeup goes on really smoothly and it looks lovely all-day long. I can go out at night with the girls and I don’t have to worry about taking a powder and a brush with me.

If you want to learn any more about this primer I will leave a link down below in case, you want to take a look at it. Make sure to leave me a comment down below and let me know if you have tried it out or what your favourite primers are!

  2. I like their setting sprays so was interested to hear your thoughts. It sounds promising for my skin. I don't like primers that dry you put but just provide good resistance against oil throughout the day x

  8. This sounds so amazing! My oils always come through throughout the day, so having a primer that really keeps them at bay would be amazing! I need to check it out as soon as I have room in my drawers, haha. I have some primers I need to start using and finish before getting a new one, but I will definitely put this on my list! Thanks so much for sharing ;-)
