Products I Regret Purchasing

Even though I want to write this post, I hate writing posts like this because I always feel like such a negative nelly. If you have read my blog for quite some time, you will know that I am pretty obsessed when it comes to makeup. And with the sheer amount of makeup that I buy on a monthly basis, there are bound to be a couple products that I don’t entirely love. And I just want to say this early on into the post, that just because these products didn’t work out for me, doesn’t mean that they are bad or that they won’t look stunning on your skin, it simply means that it didn’t work well for me and my skin type.

It really took me a while to sit down and put this post together. Normally when a product doesn’t work for me I will either donate it, give it away or just throw it in the bin. But there were a couple items that I kept to one side so that I could do this post. These products didn’t work for me for a multitude of reasons and I will go into that a little more in the post. You will also notice that hell of a lot of the products that I’m going to mention are foundations, but that is just because I buy foundations more than any other makeup product. Anyway, without further rambling, I will jump into the post…

Becca Ultimate Cover Concealer
I had such high hopes for this Becca concealer and I have to admit that I was a little let down by it. I did a big post on this back when I first got it around a year ago and I said then that I wasn’t too sure about it. There were things about this Becca Ultimate Cover Concealer that I loved, such as the coverage was second to one, it was right up there with my MAC Studio Fix Concealer, which I have loved for years. But then there were other things about this concealer that tipped the scales and made me dislike it.

Such as, it says in the name of this product that it is a cream product, but in actual fact it is quite a thick and gel like formula. When I apply this to my face it feels so thick and sticky that it is hard to blend in and particularly around my eyes it gives the feeling like it is seriously dragging the skin. Like I said, the initial coverage is really good and it covers everything that I need, but it does look quite thick, cakey and throughout the day I find that it really settles in the fine lines around my eyes. If I ever have a bad breakout then I will reach for this, but otherwise this is just sat in my draw!

MAC Bronzer
This was the first bronzer that I ever bought that wasn’t drugstore and from Superdrug. To start with I adored this bronzer. Back in the day I was a little bit of a MAC whore, anything that they did, I had to own. When I was 16 it seemed like the only beauty brand that anybody wanted to mention was MAC, so I pretty much bought their whole range, including this bronzer. Over the years I have bought both the shimmer and matte version of this bronzer, and I want to be 100% honest and admit that I didn’t really like either of them.

I thought at the time that this bronzer was great, at the end of the day I didn’t really have anything to compare them to. What I didn’t realise at the time was just how orange toned this bronzer really was and when I look back on photos of myself when I was wearing this I am pretty horrified. Plus, at that time I was a fan of just piling it on, because when you’re 15 you can never wear enough bronzer. Now that I have tried other, much better bronzers, it just makes me really realise how poor this bronzer really was.

MAC Face & Body Foundation
This was one of the first MAC foundations that I ever used and I have to admit that I genuinely cannot stand it. I think I just dove into buying this foundation without really reading too much into it and I have to say that it is just not what I wanted. Firstly, I like full coverage foundation and this stuff is pretty much as sheer as water. I have tried to build this up so that it actually covers things, but I just felt like I was putting hell of a lot of product on my face to get next to no coverage out of it. I have even tried it since on my body to even out texture and to bronze me up a little in areas where I need it such as on my chest and legs where I don’t catch the sun, but I just didn’t love it.

I understand that the MAC Face and Body foundation is good for a full multitude of reasons. I have a friend that works on Broadway and they always use this foundation as their base because it is lightweight and acts as something for powders and face paint to stick to. But for me on an everyday basis, I just need something with a little more substance and more importantly, coverage to see me throughout the day and actually feel confident with my skin. Worse thing is I bought the huge 120ml bottle so even if I use this every now and again, there is no way that I will ever use it all up.

EX1 Foundation
If you have read my blog for quite a while, then you will know that around two years ago, I was in love with this EX1 Foundation. I had read online that big celebrities like Adele wore the EX1 brand, so naturally anything that is good enough for Adele is good enough for me, so I had to buy it. I got this from the ASOS website and I am sure that it only set me back around £10 so in my book that is a bargain at side of some of the prices that I have paid for foundation before. I even have to admit that when I first started wearing this, I did actually really like the foundation.

It wasn’t until I had worn this foundation for a couple weeks that I really found my issue with it. This is quite a dewy foundation, so it didn’t exactly go hand in hand with my oily skin, but that didn’t really bother me, I powdered it down and blotted throughout the day, and I actually thought it gave a really pretty luminosity to the skin. My issue was that it broke me out really badly. I am one of them incredibly lucky people that never seems to get breakouts, but this one made pimples pop up all over the place and as soon as I stopped using it, everything went straight back to normal. This is a very pretty and cheap foundation, it just didn’t work in the long run for me.

Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes Mascara
I cannot believe that I am saying this, but I have finally found a Charlotte Tilbury product that didn’t work for me. Anybody who has read my blog for a while will know that I adore Charlotte Tilbury. I have had her products for years and everything has seemed to work so incredibly well for me. It actually pains me to have to write this about this Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes mascara, but I just have to be honest and say that this really didn’t work out for me. And to be quite honest, I know quite a lot of other people that have tried this mascara out and they found the same problems as me.

For me, this mascara just didn’t last very well for me. When I put this on first thing in the morning I cannot deny that my lashes looked really long and lifted, it pretty much did everything that I would want from a mascara. But as the day went on, I realised how much it was transferring and running under my eyes. Normally, with my usual day to day makeup, I never wear waterproof mascara and I never have an issue of mascara transferring, but I did with this Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes. I tried this so many times and gave it a shot, but each and every time I ended up looking like a panda!

Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo Foundation
I know that hell of a lot of people love this foundation and I am no doubt going to offend people by saying this, but I really did not get on with the Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo Foundation. I have tried to make this work so many times, but it just doesn’t seem to work well for my skin. I think the first thing that put me off this foundation when I first bought it was just the texture of it. If you pump this foundation out onto the back of your hand, it comes out like a swirly dog poop, it holds it shape and it doesn’t run because of how thick it is.

My main bugbear with this foundation is just how it made my skin feel. From the moment that I put this foundation I feel like my pores are clogged and my face looks incredibly cakey. Even though I usually apply my foundation with a buffing brush, I tried applying this with a Beauty Blender in order to get a lighter coverage and texture, but it just didn’t work out. It seemed to just sit really uncomfortably on my skin. I persevered with this a couple times, but I have to admit that most of this foundation is still sat in my drawer, untouched!

Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse
Do not even get me started on this foundation, if you have seen my full review on this foundation, you will know that this is be biggest let down in the world. When I was much younger and I was in secondary school, this was my go to foundation. I would apply it back in the day with a little cheap cosmetic sponge and in my head, I thought that it looked perfection, all I can remember about it was having to go back in and top it up throughout the day to make my skin look flawless. So, when I was strolling through Boots one day, I had to pick it up and try it out again.

Literally as soon as I bought this foundation I ran upstairs to try it out. I put this Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse on such a pedestal back in the day, so my hopes for it were incredible high, what I was met with was sheer disappointment. This stuff was so incredibly patchy, it didn’t seem to stick to certain areas and when I tried to build up the coverage, the product seemed to just rub off my face. No matter what I tried, this stuff just looked purely horrific. I don’t know if something has changed with this over the years but it certainly wasn’t the same as what I had tried back in the day!

Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation
I really thought that this foundation would work for me because it seemed to work for everybody else in the world and people really seemed to love it. When I got it, it just didn’t live up to my quite high expectations. I thought that this foundation would be ultimate coverage and long lasting, but on me it was pretty much the opposite. I have things on my skin that I like to cover with my foundation, don’t get me wrong though, my skin is clear, I just have pigmentation on my cheeks. This foundation didn’t seem to cover it in the slightest.

I tried a couple times with the Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation and even tried applying it differently to try and get the best results but to no avail. Whether I used buffing brushes or a Beauty Blender, I just couldn’t get the foundation to be full coverage, no matter how much I tried to pack on the product. I also found that when I was going in with other products on top of the foundation such as concealer and bronzer, the foundation underneath would move and it would end up showing even more of what I initially wanted to try and hide.

So, there you have it, just a handful of products that haven’t exactly worked out for me. Even though there are quite a lot of products mentioned here, it is nothing in comparison to how many products I actually buy. I always make sure that before I commit to a product and spend my hard-earned cash on something, I always make sure to do my research to get a good fit, every now and again, it just doesn’t work out like that. Make sure to leave me a comment down below and let me know what products didn’t quite work out for you!

  1. I think we've all bought products we regret purchasing - and in my case once too often! I remember the Mac Face & Body Foundation being so hyped up several years ago but it didn't wow me either x

  3. It's always a shame when products don't live up to expectations! So many people used to love the Maybelline dream matte mousse, so it's funny that practically everyone hates it now. Great post xx

  4. I think I feel the same about Lock It Foundation. I tried it twice and LOVED it but since then it's gone so patchy and I'm really not sure why. It also is really difficult to blend as it's so thick. Such a shame as I thought I was going to love it!!

  8. OMG YES. The Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation was my FAVORITE in junior high. It was my holy grail, and I also applied it with those little disposable sponges. Why??? I haven't used it in years now!

  9. I know there have been a lot of products that have disappointed me, I actually always appreciate a post like this because it could save someone from making mistake! hahah, even though things work differently for everyone, sometimes sharing your experience with a product that happened to be negative, is kind of good for someone else looking at that product. Thanks for sharing!
