Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Review

I cannot believe that I am actually writing a post about this Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation. The last time I used this foundation, I was probably around 14 and still in comprehensive school. A couple months ago I saw my favourite beauty YouTuber Casey Holmes talk about this and she said that she loved it, so of course I had to try it back out. All I could really remember about this foundation from wearing it over 9 years ago was that it didn’t seem to last very long and I used to have to carry it around with me, it would rub off so easily onto my clothing and I wore a shade that was far too dark for me.
But, hell of a lot has changed since then. Back then, I don’t even think that I used a concealer under my eyes and I most certainly didn’t set my face with loose powder. I had to beg my mum and dad just to buy me the foundation so they sure as shit weren’t going to buy me everything else as well. But, now that I have a good makeup routine in place, I actually thought that this might work with everything else that I do. So, I took myself off into Boots, swatched a couple and walked out of there with my VERY OLD favourite foundation in my hands!

As soon as I got home I couldn’t wait to give it a go, but I wanted to wait and get some photos of it looking as perfect as can be. I used to hate digging into it for the first time and ruining how it looked. When I first started to try it out, the first thing I noticed was that it is exactly the same as I remember it to be. I don’t really know if the texture is one that I like, it is just very strange, but not unpleasant. I think I just found it strange because it is so different to anything that I have been using recently.
The colour that I got was pretty poor. It was quite red toned, but I could only notice that once I had it on half of my face and by that point it was too late to go back. I applied one light layer to the face and it didn’t really seem to do anything. It made my face look very red, but didn’t really apply any coverage, and I was using my traditional Chanel foundation brush, because that was the kind of brush that I would use back in the day. I have said before that my cheeks really are the test for a foundation and coverage because of my pigmentation and sun damage, and with one layer, this just didn’t really work out.

So, I went in with another light layer of this Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse. As I put it onto my cheek to apply it, it didn’t seem to layer on top of the foundation very well. The Dream Matte Mousse actually seemed to rub off and create like little layers of foundation that just dropped off my face. Also, another thing that I noticed was that when I went in with more product, it looked like a completely different colour to that what was already on my face, because the lower layer had oxidised that much, that quickly.
In the end, after a while of trying to build up the coverage but to no luck, I decided to try and go in with my Beauty Blender. I never really use my Beauty Blender for foundation because I feel like it absorbs too much of my liquid foundation, but I thought this might just pack on some coverage… I was wrong.
After going in with this all over my face, I looked a hot mess. Actually, let's remove the word ‘hot’, I just looked a mess. My face was more or less bright red because of the undertone of the foundation, even though in the name there is the word golden. It was patchy and muddy looking in places, you could still see my pigmentation even though I tried to layer it up and I used more or less half of the tub. Not to mention that when I tried to apply foundation and powder on top of this it just seems to rub the foundation around my face!
Sometimes, a blast from the past isn’t always the best thing. I think I am going to be sticking to what I know from now on. Let me know in the comments down below what some of the makeup is that you wore when you were younger!

  3. I remember this from secondary school too, I wonder why it was such a teenage staple.

I also remember when I was really young I wasn't allowed makeup but I used to use vaseline on my lips so I used to put it on my eyelids too for a slight shimmer and pop on a sneaky clear mascara. haha x

  4. This is such a flashback to my school days, I see it has changed much!! I remember it used to roll off whilst I tried to apply back in the day. That never stopped me though. I would just keep going until my face was caked in it hahaha!! Loved this post it made me feel so nostalgic! x

  7. Ha this was my GO TO foundation at school and I can't believe it really is that bad - I also assumed it was just my lack of skills back then. I definitely remember it oxidising a lot though!
