What Is SEO and How Can It Help You?

I wanted to do a post which is all about SEO. When I’m not blogging my full time job is working as a marketing executive, so over the 4 years which I have been doing that I have learnt a thing or two about SEO and how to get your website up the search rankings.

So first let’s start with what does SEO mean. It is a term which is thrown about a lot when it comes to our websites or blogs. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and all that means is strategies and techniques that can be used in order to increase the number of visitors to your website by getting your website/blog high up on search engines such as Google and Yahoo.

So in this post I am going to share with you my tips and tricks to get your blog up the rankings so that you get a good number of organic visitors every day without the aid of social media or promotion.

1)     Keyword placement

The main way to boost your website or blog and get it to move up the rankings is by keyword placement. When writing a post, you need to identify what keywords you would want to be liked with that post.

For example, if I was doing a post about the Urban Decay Naked Weightless Concealer I would want my keywords to be, urban decay, concealer, full coverage concealer… the keywords should just be anything that relate to what your post is about.

Then several times throughout your post you should insert the keywords. By doing this when Google is searching and scanning your content it will recognise these keywords or phrases and when somebody searches this term it will show your post and your website.

The key with keywords is to make sure that you are using them consistently but do not overuse them. If you just bung the keyword in random places in order to boost SEO your post can be classed as spam and for that Google won’t show it. Google robots will check through your content and make sure that it is perfectly readable, if they feel that it is choppy with too many keywords just bunged in, it will not show.

What I like to do is write my content just as I would say it, without thinking too much about keywords. Then when the content is finished I will go back through it and place my keywords. This way I know that they are in there, but not too frequently.

2)     Format your blog post URL

Right, now moving onto the URL of your individual blog post or website pages. For each post or page on your site, it should be titled correctly, again with suitable keywords.

For example, if I am ready to post my blog post about the Urban Decay Naked Weightless Concealer I want my URL to be something along the lines of

You should aim to keep the variable of your URL which is the section in bold to be below 50 characters. Also to help with your place in the rankings when constructing your URL, you should cut all connectives such as ‘the’ and ‘and’. Connectives like them are just not needed in a blog post title. Again little things like making sure your URL is correct is just another tip to boost your SEO ranking position.

3)     Add labels to your posts and pages

By adding labels to your posts and pages it is just another way to get them keywords in your post and make it stronger with regards to SEO. Labels on posts these days are not as powerful as they used to be when it comes to SEO, but it doesn’t hurt to do it.

Before you set a post life just input some suitable labels which Google can link to your post. For this I suggest not making the label too specific. Such as if it is a label to match my example of the Urban Decay Naked Weightless Concealer I would go for something broad such as ‘concealer’, ‘review’ and ‘makeup’.

4)     Format your images for SEO

Another way to get them keywords into your blog post is by formatting your images properly before uploading.

When you have taken your images and loaded them onto your computer or laptop, you need to give them a correct file name. Again with the same example as before I would name my images ‘Urban Decay Naked Weightless Concealer Review (1).jpg’. Then upload that file to your website or blog. Make sure that all images have individual numbers so that the file name is not completely the same.

Even though you cannot see the title of the images that you have uploaded, the Google robots that I mentioned before will do. And if you have several images on your blog post or page it is just gets that set of keywords in a couple of times with zero effort needed.

5)     Provide meta tags

Meta tags are similar to the labels which I previously mentioned. Google used to be huge on these and their ranking positions would be based on the meta titles which were associated with a post or a page.
You can input meta tags in the HTML links on a page. Here again you just want to input any broad search terms which people may put into a search engine in order to find your post. There is no rule for what you can put into this area, just put anything that that is relative to your blog.

6)     Be active in the comments on your posts

Comments on blog posts are so important. Not only does it help you to connect with the people who read your page, but it also gives you a chance to get them keywords in again and boost your SEO ranking.

For example, if somebody left me a comment saying, I would respond and try and get in there the title of the blog post, such as, “Thanks for your comment, the Urban Decay Naked Weightless Concealer has been a favourite of mine for a long time”. Again, make sure that you don’t do it with every comment and make them identical. They have to read well and make sure that your readers and the people who are commenting know that you a person and not a robot.

7)     Avoid lots of ads on your site

Ads are not uncommon on websites or blogs, it is just a way to get a little extra return from your blog, and if you can, then why not!

But you have to be careful not to have too many ads on your page. Creating too many external links on your site can go against you with regards to search engines. Google doesn’t like lots of external links because to their little bots that they send out to search the web it just looks like your page is full of spam.

As a rule of thumb, I would never have more than 3-4 ads on a page at one time.

8)     Try to have a guest post

Guest posting on another blog is a great way to boost your SEO. The first reason why it is beneficial to your blog to guest post is that it showcases your work to a new audience.

The other reason why guest posting is amazing is because it creates internal links to your site and Google loves this. If another website likes your site enough to link to your page or whole site then Google observes this as them been something on that page which people like to see, therefore upping your game on the SEO ranking front. It is important when you have a blog to help other bloggers in your niche out, everybody should support everybody!

9)     Review analytics

Every now and again you should carry out analytical work. SEO is pretty much centred around keywords. So you need to make sure that the keywords that you are using are relevant and are actually been searched for by people.

By doing this it helps you to narrow down the keywords that are actually been used and just helps you filter out some of the spam. By using the Google Keyword tool, it can tell you how many times a certain keyword has been searched throughout a set amount of time, and where the person is in the world and just lots more useful information which can help you target specific people in your demographic.

10)   Think about your word count

It may go without saying but I will mention it anyway but word count is important when it comes to your blog and the SEO rankings of your post. If you write a short post, there is less opportunity for you to input keywords and get a high level on the ranking. With longer post you have more places to input relevant keywords throughout your blog and still make it readable.

So there you have my 10 helpful tips to boost the SEO on your blog or website. If you have any comments or questions regarding either this post or SEO on your website, please feel free to leave me a comment below.
