Beauty Tips and Tricks

This is a post all about my favourite beauty tips and tricks. There are so many posts out there similar to this or hacks that you should try, but these are the ones that I use on a near enough daily basis and they always work for me. They’re just little things to save you time and hassle and hopefully help you out in the long run!

1)          Zig-zag partings give hair body

I have the world's flattest hair, trying to get body into it is just an impossible task. No matter how much curling or teasing it just doesn’t seem to look like there is any life in it. By taking a comb and creating a zig zag parting I find that because the hair is going against the grain it has more lift to it.

2)          Brush the hair from roots to ends to help disperse natural oils

Over the day your scalp makes natural oils which keep the hair really soft. Some people see this as been greasy but it isn’t because every human has this. It is this oil that keeps hair soft and luscious looking. When you brush your hair from the root downwards you pull the oil to cover the tips.

3)          Rinse conditioner out in cold water

When you rinse conditioner off in hot water you are just washing all the goodness off your hair. By using cold water, it opens the cuticle of the hair and allows the conditioner to get into the follicle and actually work. Then the water will rinse any excess off.

4)          Use warm cotton wool balls before tweezing

To help prevent redness and puffiness when plucking your brows, place cotton wool balls in a tub and pour a kettle of water on them just so they are covered. Leave to cool until they are warm but not scorching. Then take the cotton and apply it to the brow area, this will open the hair follicle and make the hair come out easier.

5)          Tweeze hair in the direction that the skin grows

When tweezing the eyebrow hairs make sure that you pull the hair out in the direction that it is growing. It makes it less painful and if you pull in a different direction it can lead to ingrown hairs and hair in the future can grow in different directions.

6)          Never change the shape of your natural brows

Brows are such a beautiful thing no matter how thick they are. You should never butcher and alter the natural shape of them, just tweeze stray hairs. A really easy thing to do is just use waxing strips, but be careful not to pull your natural brow off!

7)          Reduce puffy eyes with spoons

I noticed when I started working full time that when I would wake up in a morning that my eyes would look really puffy and big, it was ever so unattractive. My nan told me the night before just before I go to bed to put two spoons in the freezer. Then the next morning takes them out and press them to your closed eyes. It will immediately reduce the puffiness.

8)          Press the area around the eyes never rub

Whether you are applying eye cream or concealer you should never rub the eye area. The area around your eye is super sensitive and such a thin layer of skin so you need to take care with this area. Always press and dab as opposed to rubbing the area.

9)          Always use your ring finer around your eyes

When applying any product around your eyes you should always use your ring finger. This finger applies so much more delicately and with less pressure than any other finger. I will admit though it took me awhile to get used to using this finger!

10)        To prolong your kohl use an eyeshadow

When you have applied a kohl to your waterline it is prone to bleeding onto the areas below the lashes and it ends up been really messy. To stop this from happening set it with a powder of the same colour to lock it in place.

11)        Train yourself not to touch your face

When you touch your face multiple times throughout the day you are just spreading germs around. It you touch a countertop or a handrail, any germs you pick up are then going straight to your face which causes breakouts. Training yourself to stop will minimise the amount of problem areas.

12)        Always prime the skin

To prolong your makeup and make it last as long as possible you should always prime the skin. I don’t see the point in spending a lot of money on a foundation to not get the most out of it that you can.

13)        Always tap off excess product

When you put powder on your brush, tap off the product so make sure that you’re not going in with a heavy hand. Do this for all powder products to make sure you’re not going to end up looking cakey as hell.

14)        Never squeeze breakouts

When you have a spot, never squeeze it. You will end up damaging the skin beneath and it can cause dark spots and dry areas. I have quite a few areas of hyperpigmentation on my chin from doing this over the years and I now regret it so much!

15)        Use tissue to blot oil

Throughout the day as you get shiny blot the oil off your face using a half a tissue. Then once the oil has gone apply some pressed powder. Don’t just apply the powder on the oil because you will get an oily brush and germs from your face will go into the powder.

16)        Warm cloth at night to wipe lips

Take a hot wash cloth at night and rub it, this will carefully exfoliate the days’ worth of dead skin from your lips and it will give you a blank canvas to work on the next day.

17)        Apply concealer around lipstick

When you apply a light layer of concealer around your lips once applying lipstick it will stop it from bleeding onto your skin. I tend to use a brush like an eyebrow brush because they are thin and so precise and will only apply the product right where I want it!

18)        Turn any lipstick matte

If you have a lipstick and you want to turn it matte just take a tissue and pull the layers apart. Place this on your lip and blot the top of the tissue paper with a translucent powder. It will make the lipstick nice and matte. Repeat this as many times as you want depending on how matte you want it.

19)        Smile when applying lipstick

If you smile when you apply lipstick it smooths out all of the contours of your lips allowing the colour to settle evenly all over the lips. This just makes sure that you don’t miss any areas. I have been known in the past to not reach right in the corners, but this trick works wonders!

20)        Warm up your lip liner

Before applying lip liner warm it up either between your fingertips or on the back of your hand. This will make it glide on the lips so much smoother than just using the pencil straight away. It may waste a little product but it will only be a really small amount.
