Why I've Fallen Out With YouTube

I have wanted to write this post for quite some time, I just wasn’t sure how I should go about. Every time I sat down to write this post, I ended up deleting everything and starting again, through fear that I would offend people. I don’t want to be disrespectful to people, that isn’t what this post is about. This also isn’t about smaller YouTubers that are trying to turn their hand to making incredible videos, this is more aimed at the bigger YouTubers that have been around for years. When I was younger, one of my favourite things to do was to sit down and watch countless YouTube videos, one after the other. Nowadays, it is more of a chore to sit down and watch people, and the fun seems to have gone from the good old days of YouTube. Anyway, I thought in this post, I would share with you, some of the reasons why I have fallen out with YouTube.

One of my main issues with it now on a whole is how little people post, again this is aimed at some of the big time YouTubers that have been doing this for years. You are lucky if some of them upload every fortnight and that is at a push. I’m not denying that isn’t the case for everybody, but for hell of a lot of them it is. I go on Snapchat when I get in from work and I watch people’s stories and you see them dragging their ass out of bed at 10am, talking about how busy they are and that they have meeting and are rushed off their feet. But all they seem to do all day is fuck all. I’m not denying that they may have tons going on behind the scenes. But when you see them sat in their huge houses, lounging around, after you’ve been at work busting a gut all day, I have to admit that it really does rub me up the wrong way.

I know how long it takes to film, edit and upload videos. I do it as part of my full-time job at work and let me tell you, if you have been doing it for a couple years, they will be able to do it with their eyes closed. And when you think about some of the really dedicated YouTubers like Holly Boon, who can film a video and upload it the same night, you know that it is easily possible. I just think that when these people have made millions from YouTube, the least they could do is upload regularly even if is once a week.

Another thing that you could say annoys me is that they are more looking like full movie productions than YouTube videos. The setup is just so over the top. I know that it is like a competition and they need to stay on top of the game and match what the other people are doing, but I miss the days when it was just somebody sat in front of a camera and doing what they love. I’m not keen on the full production feel, it makes me feel a little uncomfortable and all of the posing at the start of beauty YouTube videos with the hair flicks and the smizing could make me physically ill.

These days as well, I find that it is hard to know who is being honest and genuine in their videos. So many people are sent free things, which is incredible, and I’m not saying that people are changing their opinions because of the free PR gifts, but it can be hard to see through it. Also, as I am sure you have seen all over YouTube, there are paid advertisements all over the show in YouTuber's videos. By law, they should disclaim it in the video, description box or in the title, and the same applies to bloggers. But you can tell when you are watching a video that they are being paid to say something because all of a sudden, they will go very scripted when they are talking about it and they don’t disclaim it. I know that to many people this probably doesn’t bother them, but it just niggles me.

Lastly, and probably most important is just all of the drama that is associated with YouTube these days. A big YouTuber can’t even sneeze these days without it being a conspiracy or them having some kind of ulterior motive. And the people that actually make the drama channels and try to profit from making shit up about other people just infuriate me. At the end of the day I just think that I am 23 years old and I don’t have time to listen to a bag of shit about people.

I’m going to leave this post here because I am pretty sure that I could ramble on all week about these bugbears that I have. To me, I just want to go to the good old days where it was just somebody showing the world what they have to offer by stripping it all back, being themselves and letting me know about amazing products. When they are sat in their mansions it would be nice if they remember where they came from and sit down and film once in awhile and repay the people that got them to where they are today.

Make sure to leave me a comment down below and let me know who some of your favourite and genuine YouTubers are at the moment. Some of my favourites are Lydia Ellise Millen, Holly Boon, Patricia Bright, Desi Perkins, Alissa Ashley, Alexandrea Garza, In The Frow and Jamie Genevieve!

  1. Yes, 100 times yes! I love this post! I'm very opinionated and love to share posts like this one! The whole idea behind vlogs is to actually document your daily life but most of the Youtubers are so fake... everything is well-thought prior to filming... nothing is left to coincidence.. and it comes across... and it's boring! Also, I'm fed up with Tanya Burr and Zoella - same boring sponsored videos!

  2. I have to say that I love that Fleur De Force and Lydia Elise Millen are so consistent in their schedules and always have been, despite moving house/wedding planning/having a baby etc - I respect that.

I find it hilarious if you watch a vlog and the person is complaining about roadworks disturbing their sleep, which they need to catch up on after a long haul flight back from a free holiday! xx

    1. Exactly, I have so much respect for the hard-working YouTubers who stay consistent!
The last thing that I want to see after a 10 hour shift and getting stuck on the M1 for 2 hours in traffic is seeing somebody moan at all of the free makeup that they have to open!

  3. I don't get the time to watch as many You Tube videos as I would like but I used to enjoy it so much. My faves have always been The Anna Edit, lily Pebbles, Lydia, Amelia Liana, Kate La Vie and Fluer. x

  5. I was cracking up through this post because I know exactly what you mean. Especially when they complain about being so busy while everyone can see on their socials that they're playing around for what looks like most of the time. I also don't really care for the over the top youtube setups. It feels very fake to watch them. If I wanted to watch something like that I'd go watch a blockbuster movie or something. I hope it doesn't deter you from it in the future though because I think the authentic ones are the ones that will get the furtherest in the end. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though!
