Giving Back At Christmas

When I was 6 years old, me and my family went away for a few nights just before Christmas and when we returned home on Christmas Eve, we had been robbed. Everything had gone. And when I say everything, I really do mean everything. Even the light bulbs had been taken from the fittings. It looked like the house had never been lived in. Something like that so close to Christmas was just horrific. It really did crush my mum and dad, not only being robbed of everything that they had ever owned, but not having any presents for me and my sister.

It was horrific at the time but the way that people rallied around us was incredible and it just helped me to realise that there are good people out there. You cannot deny that there are some bastards out there, but there are also some good souls. Everybody at some point in their life will have a hard time and need help off another person, and Christmas time always reminds me of that and how kind people were to us when we really needed it.

That is why every Christmas myself and my family like to do our bit to try and help somebody else. For me this year, I have partnered up with the woman’s refuge where I live. I visit here quite a few times a year just to try and help where I can. Most of the time the women that are in this place are well rounded and professional women that have reached hard times or have been in an abusive relationship and they have had to run with nothing but the clothes on their backs and in more cases than not, their children.

To say that those women are at the lowest they could probably ever be, it is incredible to see them. To see how strong and defiant they are about the situation that they are in and just believing that it is going to get better. If not for them, then for their children. Most of the time the people there just want somebody to talk to, and unload on. To them, I am just an impartial ear that they can rant to for a while. Or they will need time to themselves, so I will play with their children while they put their feet up, basically anything that they want to do, I am down for.

But I try to help out in as many ways as possible. Whether it be in clothes donations, toys for the kids or just my time, anything is greatly received. I just think as a woman, this is important for me to do. God, forbid it ever happens, but I could be there one day, and I would want people to do what they can for me to get back on my feet.

I just think at this time of year we all need to do our bit to try and help other people out more. I don’t want this post to see like I am blowing my trumpet with my charity work, I just want to get that message out there of helping each other. I want to be able to finish this year and think that I made a difference to somebody and helped them out in some way or another. And if it is too late, make a start in next year and try harder!

People just have to do what they can, no matter how big or small the gesture, it will make a difference to somebody. I will never stop being grateful to the people that helped my family at Christmas time when we really needed it the most. People gave us clothes, food and furniture and they didn’t have to do that, but they chose to and we are so grateful.

So, this Christmas I am going to be in that woman’s refuge taking loads of selection boxes up, colouring books, old clothes and my magazines and just try to help somebody else. It is so important for everybody to try and do their bit, especially at this time of year when it can be so hard for some people. Christmas is about so much more than gift giving and I think that gets lost sometimes!

    1. All I had to do was find a contact number online and plan my first visit and let them know why I wanted to be involved, now I just call when I want to visit. I love going there, it is so special to do something that matters!

  2. Goodness me, I can't even imagine what that would have been like! I can't fathom how anyone can do this, particularly during such a giving time of the year.

This is such an inspiring post, I love that you are sharing your own ways of giving. The world needs more compassion

    1. Sometimes it takes something devastating to realise just how fortunate we are and give us the kick up the backside that we need to do something truly worthwhile!
